Automated Security checkpoint
A new high-tech automated security checkpoint system has made its way into some U.S. airports. These systems often include a touch-screen or voice recognition option that will let travelers know they are being scanned. Once scanned, the traveler may choose to either skip the security or enter a passageway if they are a slow or inattentive traveler. Most of these systems are designed to be used at airports or secured areas outside the airport. However, some airports have also introduced the automated security checkpoint to smaller local airports.
Some of these systems have been found to cause discomfort for the traveler. The new automated security checkpoint systems feature larger clear signs, automated conveyor belts and electronic bin loading technology. Passengers can easily approach the screening lanes at more than three stations, allowing them to skip slower-moving individuals and to easily bypass those who are in a rush to get on the tarmac. However, some passengers still find it difficult entering and exiting the airplane terminal because they cannot clearly see the areas where the automated security checkpoint machines are located.

There are some additional inconveniences that passengers will experience when using an automated security checkpoint at an international airport. When passengers want to sit down, they must pass through a chute and then stand still for a minute. Even though this time is not long, most passengers find it embarrassing and difficult. They often find themselves taking off their shoes, brushing their hair or clearing their face with a napkin rather than waiting until they are called upon by the agent to do so.
These problems are likely to continue to increase as the use of these checkpoints at international airports continues to grow. The potential for confusion, delay and embarrassment are likely to increase when more travelers choose to use these screening lanes at U.S. airports rather than the designated lane designated for international passengers. There are also concerns about the privacy of individuals being searched when using these lanes. Many Americans believe that terrorists could be searching out U.S. citizens through these screening lanes to obtain information about how to fly a plane. This concern is not likely to ease any time soon.

Automated checkpoints are being used at many airports around the world. However, American travelers may be concerned about the increasing use of these machines at airports here in the United States. According to a Department of Transportation press release, there are currently no plans to add facial recognition technology to passenger scanning systems at U.S. airports. This news is good for travelers, but bad news for biometric airport security. With the implementation of computed tomography or facial recognition software at airports, the biometric scanning process is expected to be more accurate and quicker than ever before.
It is expected that in the near future, all of the major airports will have automated lanes at all of their departure and arrival points. However, this does not mean that every airport in the United States will be able to offer these automated lanes. There are currently two major problems with implementing these automated lanes on the boardwalk at American airports. First, the current laws regarding nudity and other indecent exposure laws do not allow airports to screen passengers without shirts or pants in the nude. Second, even though most airports do not allow passengers to walk around naked, most of them still allow passengers to remove their clothing as long as they are sitting down.
